Makante Achchan a nice watch!

A lot of stories celebrating the father - son bond have been told already. However this one is a little different with the protagonists being father and son in real life too. The film ridicules a lot of prevailing trends and also comes with a social message. The first half is thoroughly entertaining. However it might get a bit slow in the second half.

Jagathy as Himaval Chaitanya, the fraud spiritual guru is fun to watch. Salim Kumar is his usual entertaining self. Suhasini's part could have been played by anyone. She is simply wasted. There aren't many characters in the movie. No character is different from anything seen before. All said and done, the movie is definitely worth a watch. It is good in parts and will make you laugh.

True. Makante Achan is perhaps one of the most watchable movies that Malayalam cinema has produced in the last one year or so. And that is not telling much about an industry that has churned heart-warming movies in plenty, not so long ago. I believe that the quality of Malayalam has dipped drastically in the last decade. A far cry from the times when Bharathan, Padmarajan, Kamal, Hariharan et al used to give us movies that made us laugh, cry and think…. Bharathan & Padmarajan are no more… Kamal & Hariharan are no longer in their own league... And Priyadarshan seems to have forgotten the art of movie making.. Add to it the silence of doyens like M T Vasudevan Nair who is not much active these days(But I cant wait for Aug 15 when his Pazhassi Raja is hitting the screens… A classic role from Mammotty is long overdue!)…

Coming back to Makante Achan, I found it surprising that I actually enjoyed the movie. Especially since V M Vinu is not a director who makes films to my liking. And U r right that Suhasini’s role could have been done by anyone. But quite frankly, I believe that she adds a lot value to the movie, if not to her role. Actually she is an actress I would bracket along with Nandita Das and Konkana Sen. I will watch any movie that stars them, because they maintain a certain quality in the movies that they pick… So whether U love them in the role or not U end up finding that the movie is watchable… And didn’t I love seeing her after so long!

It’s the presence of Sreenivasan and Suhasini that prompted me to give this movie a try in the first week of its release. But I am not a big fan of the actor in Vineeth Sreenivasan especially after his debut film Cycle in which I thought that he was completely eclipsed by Vinu Mohan. So none of them actually disappointed.

Coming from a first-time writer like Samjad Narayanan, the movie is a good one and the minor hitches here and there can be pardoned. Finally, this was a movie which should have been scripted by Sreenivasan and we could have had a classic in our hand.

Oh yeah! I totally agree. Padmarajan and Bharatan, it was passing of an era.

Wrote that ages ago.

Among contemporaries I like Sathyan Anthikad. His movies still maintain the standard. It's still simple stories of simple people. We can talk for days on this topic. I watched Harihar Nagar last week. It's no great story but you can laugh your heart out. Appukkuttan played by Jagadish has grown dumber however is a dentist now. Wonder how!

Hmmm.. So U r a padmarajan fan too.. your post was good and the link U gave to the other post "Januvaryude nashtam" was a real cracker..

Talking about Anthikad, I watched Bhagyadhevatha yesterday... I have very high regards for the Director in Anthikkad... But thats not what I think about Anthikkad, the writer... This is his 4th outing as the script writer... The movie is definitely watchable, but lacks the class of his earlier movies, many of which were penned by Sreenivasan... In this movie, Jayaram seems to have continued from where he left in Veruthe Bharya (U constantly get reminded of it).. But go for it just for the class acts from the four veterens.. KPAC Lalitha, Nedumudy Venu, Mammukkoya and Innocent... They just rock and carry the movie through...

I watched Moz n Cat too today... But I dont want to comment on the latest offering from Fazil, the most influential director in Malayalam(for more than one reason!).. Its not worth a comment. :)
