Ik hou van Diana!

I meditated a bit over a title for this post. I love Diana! It sounds strange, doesn't it? That's exactly why I went for a little Dutch there, which interestingly conveys the same sounding less wierd (or wierder?) Well, Diana is no princess. It's a software I just cannot do without. It doesn't do anything out of the ordinary. All it does is help me keep track of my to-do list (for over 3 years now). Yeah it also helps me deal with my random cut-copy-paste and disconnected thoughts.

At work of late, people have been curious about this ever active little window in my computer. That's when I thought I should do a bit to promote this teeny weeny tool that has made my life a lot easier. Diana's creator Sanne Schaap (alias Sheep) says the program was not made to impress and simplicity is his philosophy. Schaap is sheep in Dutch. Thanks to Google language tools. Ik hou van Diana! You see the connection now :P

The core part of Diana is a calendar. Click on a day and you can enter data against the day in the panel below. It remains there until you remove it explicitly. So you can go back and forth managing your past, present and future with the aid of your arrow keys. The calendar menu gives options to go to next month, previous month, jump to today and make summary report (of the next 40 days). Keyboard short cuts are Pg dn, Pg up, F5, F9 respectively. That's about it. Nothing more nothing less.

The download is available for free at Sheep Friends. Try it once and you are going to like it, the least assured, you will forget Post-it notes. At Sheep Friends there are other adorable friends of Diana
  • Abby, a quick conversion tool (my second favourite)
  • Billy, a lightweight mp3 player (Billy in Wikipedia)
  • Hawk, an ultra fast hex file viewer
  • Kelly, a disturbingly small desktop calculator
  • Natty, a system tray mail notifier

Finally, thanks to Saurabh who got a reluctant me hooked to Diana.

While I was making 'critical stop' and 'exclamation' sounds from the windows sounds menu on your laptop(your dad was sitting next to me and it was fun)I saw this thing and I thought it was some team development tool using which you kept team members updated of your progress in your code module, cos you had mostly that sort of entries in it.
Turns out it is just a calender with a to-do function! created long ago in 2004.Smartphones can gemakkelijk slager deze schapen!
And I just hate these captchas!

It took me 3 readings and google translator to get a hold of what you are talking about. I am laughing hysterically. Yeah you did scare my 'computer savvy' dad. In fact, he even apprised me of the possible harm you would have done to the machine. :D

What is that! Smartphones can gemakkelijk slager deze schapen! Smart phones can easily butcher the sheep! I disagree with you there. Well, for me Diana's use is beyond managing a todo list. You would have seen the kind of stuff that goes into that. Tell me how easy is it to ctrl+v from your comp to your smart phone. In between I tried mind maps and figured the conventional to-do list is much better. It's just a matter of convenience.

But I totally agree with your last line. I thought it was again something in Dutch. I'm going to turn off that word verification thingie. Bye bye Captcha!

Ctrl+v!!
I open my phone's calender,on any date I make an entry usingkeypad or connect it to the computer like any usb device or wireless using Bluetooth and type away

For the whole day on my phone's screen I get my event,as for to-do there are reminder alarms etc..

Diana has been embedded in every smartphone!
Also with the advent of Vista and now Windows 7 with integrated organizer software no one will use 3rd party software.

In China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan
The bile of a snake to be eaten is mixed with some rice wine and consumed before the meal as an invigorating beverage and appetite stimulant. In the treatment of diseases, snake bile is used for whooping cough, rheumatic pain, high fever, infantile convulsion, hemiplegia, hemorrhoids, gum bleeding, and skin infections.

WHY all this, you ask..well I had to type 'biles' as captcha for this post
Actually when I finished typing I captcha reloaded to 'feaces'

I had to create a Facebook account today because parents wanted to see pics from pooja's wedding that Aishwarya had in her Facebook album.

Which reminds me you aren't in any of them :(
(they were in One of the 70 odd images)

I was appalled by the image quality at Facebook, sizes were less than 100kb!

While saving images from my live gallery I hope you used the download button at the top left corner of the image instead of save-as (right-click),because you get the original size image at 4000×3000 pixels! by using the button.

Can you really disable Google's defense against malicious automated bots that want to flood your blog or transfer mobile code in to your system that could be keylogers or back door entries to malicious users?(captchas)

Your comment again had me in splits. Well, I should have been a little careful talking to a gadget freak. As I said it is just a matter of convenience. Sometimes it is a piece of code or some text from a website that make it to Diana. Sometimes I save links there. Probably I like it because I have a big thing tools that ooze simplicity.

Windows do provide a myriad of tools, but that doesn't and will not stop people from using 3rd party softwares. There always will be some kind of a need or other. We do development in .Net which pretty much provides all kind of controls. But still we use a lot of 3rd party components for development or simply to make the IDE better.

Captcha is turned off now... Comment away!

I'm waiting for their video release man! I have made a conscious attempt to be in almost every frame. I hope they just don't edit me away! However if they do that, it will simply end up a 10 minute video ;)

You talked about the MLM for “Three Men in a Boat” and I am one of the most important members in your chain… But I guess your MLM for Diana is catching up faster! I was installing this tiny thing only to be watched over my shoulders by my office friend Arun. Less than five minutes later he had already installed and was explaining me the features. He is the tech-savvy one among us poor conservative reluctantly-modern Bankers! Anyway, we have fully embraced Diana. Thanks for sharing.

On the sidelines, I have started reading Three Men in a boat again. Especially loved the part when the author describes his uncle trying to hang a picture. It was really hilarious. More than the humour, I think it’s a book worth reading for his analysis of the human behaviour. I could relate myself to each of the characters, at different points of time. I have read that the novel was actually meant to be serious travelogue and Jerome got carried away with the humour element as he wrote it! Now, that is another thing that I can fully relate to. :)

Harris's maze adventure. Don't miss that one. It had me in splits. I was in for a routine consultation with my doctor and there I was reading that part of the book. I realised half the people there were looking at me amused. Some gave me that funny look "of course she has come to the wrong hospital"

I'm happy for Diana. Your comment was so relieving especially after that Diana bashing Sajeev (my cousin) did. Check out the earlier comments

I just read Sajeev's comments... I loved the part when he writes about the biles and the feaces..

Frankly, other than the biles and the faeces, I didn’t understand much of what he is telling... He is talking about "smart" phones and I feel out of place... But what I could understand (and i am not sure whether I'm right) is that rather than the USB's and Blutooths to an external device, it would be much simpler on the Diana.. Click n write.. and thats it... Or blame it on the fact that I'm not a gadget freak or even gadget savvy... I belong to a different era who associates a phone to the "Hello Hello Hello" like in the latest TV ad...

Probably, the advantage I think he talks about is that a smartphone can give u reminders which Diana doesnt.. But as u rightly put it, Diana is in lieu of the Post-it slip.. Nothing More, Nothing Less...

Absolutely!!! Even my use of a cell phone is limited to texts and make/answer calls. Click and write! You can have all of your stuff up there. No hassles. It stores the data in a config file which you can find in the installed directory. Everything about it is simple. The only disadvantage (as Chandana too pointed out) is the unavailability of scroll bars.
