That's gully cricket!

With summer holidays and IPL season 2, things cannot get better for children all over India. I took a detour yesterday on my way back home and chanced upon some kids playing cricket. They were having immense fun. Seeing my car approaching, the batter quickly towed the stumps. Wondering how? That's convenient cricket aka gully cricket.

Generally it's a brick or a plastic bottle that is found roleplaying stumps. But this is indeed cool, right? There was someone silently on the watch, or should I say umpiring the game. He looked quite appreciative about the whole thing.

I wanted to capture the fun but didn't want to interrupt the game and annoy them. I pulled over on the side of the road, went up to them with my cam and meekly asked, "Can I take a few pictures?" They gave the nod in unison. They were more than happy and seemed to be enjoying the attention.

It is not just with kids man...the grown ups are also no different...ask these guys...what is India's national sport...they might simply say it's Cricket, even when they know it's Hockey. Like they say...Eat Cricket! Sleep Cricket! Live Cricket!

At work, we have this EPL Season 2 in a fortnight's time. Guess what EPL is. Encora Premium League. Stop smiling kid!

Hopefully Lalit Modi will get inspired from this... He shifted the IPL from India to South Africa.. He may think of shifting it from the Pitch to the Gully.. :)

Looks like you are pissed with Mr. Modi ;)

Nope.. It was a very positive suggestion.. When Test cricket was the order of the day and One day cricket was in its infant stages, the purists disposed it as a joke and look what happened later... Again, not very long ago T20 made its appearance and the idea was poo-pooed by many.. But it has transformed the game into a different level.. So for now, the idea of having an official gully cricket may sound crazy... But dont just write off the idea!!! 10 years down the line U may proudly show that "See, my friend wrote in my blog about Gully cricket, much before any BCCI guy ever thought of it!!" ;)
